Should I Go To Auburn University

Should I Go To Auburn University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Katie received her Bachelors degree in Zoology and her Master of Education from Auburn University. She is currently a tutor in Austin specializing in Biology tutoring, English tutoring, Life Sciences tutoring, and several other subjects. See what she had to say about her experience at Auburn University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Katie: Auburn Universitys campus is pedestrian and bike friendly. There are beautiful green spaces. It is not what I would call an urban campus. Tiger Transit is the bus system that transports students all around campus. Students have unlimited access to Tiger Transit because it is included in their tuition fees. Transit stops are located at major areas on campus, as well as at some off-campus locations like various apartment complexes. Parking can be an issue. When I began my time at Auburn University, I lived on campus and was able to park my vehicle pretty easily in the designated areas near the dorms. However, I later moved off-campus, and I found that at certain times of the day, it could be difficult to find a parking spot in certain areas. Depending on how close to campus you live, I would encourage you to ride a bike or walk instead of trying to drive a car every day. I always felt safe on campus. During my time at Auburn University, I attended classes during the day and at night, and I never had any safety concerns. There are emergency call boxes located in various places on campus in case you feel you need help. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Katie: My professors, advisers, and teaching assistants were usually very helpful whenever I needed assistance or information. Office hours and email addresses would be made available to students. Email is highly used for communication between students and faculty. I usually sent emails if I had any questions. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Katie: During my first year at Auburn University, I lived in a dorm in an area on campus called The Hill. I enjoyed being on campus because there are places to eat close by, as well as places to meet friends. The Hill includes Terrell Dining Hall. There is also a relatively new student center (completed in 2008) built toward the middle of campus with places to eat located on different floors of the building. There are other choices at various places on campus, such as the coffee shop in the library, or you can travel to downtown Auburn (along College Street or Magnolia Avenue) to have your choice of local restaurants and fast food. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Katie: For my undergraduate degree, I was in the College of Sciences Mathematics, where I majored in Zoology/Conservation Biology. I loved my science classes because many of the labs were hands-on. Many of my biology science labs took us out into the field (local streams, state parks, etc.) to make observations and gather data based on what we were learning in class. I felt supported by several of my professorsDr. Folkerts, Dr. Lishak, Dr. Boyd, Dr. Guyer, and others. Other majors that were popular were Engineering, Education and Business. I know that Engineering has lots of options like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. Many of my friends spoke well about the Engineering programs, but I know they can be difficult. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Katie: I found it easy to meet people and make friends as a freshman. I was not involved at all in Greek life. There are people who are involved in sororities and fraternities at Auburn University, but most people that I knew were not involved. I joined and participated in different clubs on campus like the Pre-Veterinary Medical Association and the Society for Conservation Biology. There are also other events that are held on campus that students can attend that would be good for making friends. My friends and I liked going to Tiger Nights, which are free events for students with activities like caricature artists, laser tag, music, comedy acts, and food. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Katie: I found the Career Center and other services helpful. They would hold job fairs and mock interviews for students. I know they had specific job fairs for Education majors, with various schools from around the state, as well as job fairs for other majors. Students can get help with developing their resumes and cover letters, as well. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Katie: The library, student union, and dorm lounges were easily available in my experience. The library could get a little crowded at peak times, like close to finals, but I could always find a nook to sit in and study. The student union is designed with lots of sitting areas in open spaces, as well as down various hallways. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Katie: The downtown Auburn area is basically on two sides of campusMagnolia Avenue and College Street. It is very close, just across the street! These streets have restaurants, bookstores, bars, and boutiques. There are other shopping areas a little farther away from campus. The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is also nearby. I only went a few timesonce for a film festival event they were hosting and another time when they held a yoga event. If you want to shop at a mall, you would probably want to drive to Auburn Mall or Tiger Town. These have department stores and other mainstream shops. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Katie: I believe the undergraduate student body is usually around 20,000 students. I was generally pleased with my class sizes. The core classes that most students have to take can be pretty large, and they are usually held in auditorium-size rooms. Your major-specific classes tend to be more manageable sizes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Katie: One of my favorite classes was Conservation Biology with Dr. Boyd. Dr. Boyd would discuss interesting topics, and he would usually try to have at least one funny slide to slip into his presentations. He also had guest lecturers based on different topics we might be learning about. I remember when he had a former student of his, who now works at an animal sanctuary, bring in live animals. It was fun to handle the animals and learn about conservation efforts to help them in their environments. Check out Katies tutoring profile. If Youre Not Growing Youre Shrinking - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / If Youre Not Growing Youre Shrinking - Introvert Whisperer If Youre Not Growing Youre Shrinking Dow Escalante November 28, 2016 Career Development No responses Go to top As we approach the end of the year people often think of their careers, so today I’m going to toss out a few thoughts for you to consider. Your career is always moving in some direction; it never stays the same. The question is: What direction is it going? Is that the direction you intended? Even if we aren’t intending to get promoted or a higher level if we aren’t growing, we’re shrinking. Growth comes in a number of ways such as learning new skills  or taking on new tasks. Think of this like the ever-expanding resume. You want to show some type of growth or progression on your resume because it demonstrates your initiative along with all sorts of other good characteristics. Also, your career is your responsibility and only you can decide what direction you want to go and how you will get there. It’s easy to get derailed by life or work circumstances but a couple of times a year, you need to make an appointment with yourself and contemplate the next couple of moves you need to make. Also, if you work for the type of company that offers classes or reimburse you for classes you take; don’t get lulled into the idea that’s all. Consider those classes a place to get started. There are colleges and university both local and online that can explode your skills. If you’re aiming for a promotion or higher level, make sure you know what you need to do to turn yourself into the best possible candidate. This is too important to make assumptions, you have to do your due diligence and speak to experts or management to get the correct information. I call this a gap analysis and I speak to too many people that either don’t do all the steps for the gap analysis or they make assumptions that prove to be wrong. There you go. Two things for you to take action on. Today.

Subtraction within 1000

Subtraction within 1000 There are different mathematical operations in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Subtraction is of the basic and prominent mathematical operation used in every branch of math and life in general. Subtraction is denoted by the sign -and is also called as difference. Subtraction means difference or the amount by which the total quantity is reduced. In subtraction the order in which the numbers are subtracted is very important. If the order of the numbers is changed the answer also changes. Hence subtraction is not commutative or associative. Example 1: Subtract the following numbers and find the answer: 792 - 561? Solution: Given are two numbers 792 and 561 which are both within 1000. Subtracting the numbers 792 + 561. First the ones place is subtracted 2 - 1 = 1. Now subtracting the tens place of the given numbers 9 - 6 = 1. Then subtracting the hundreds place of the numbers = 7 5 = 2. Hence the subtraction of: 792 - 561 = 211. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) What is the difference when the two numbers 695 and 382 are subtracted? a) 313 b) 963 c) 343 d) None of these. Correct answer: option a. Explanation: Here the two numbers 695 and 382 are given. Subtracting the ones place 5 - 2 = 3. Subtracting the tens place 9 - 8 = 1. Adding the hundreds place 6 - 3 = 3. Hence, subtracting the numbers 695 - 382 = 313.

Volunteering With Tutorfair - Snehas Story

Volunteering With Tutorfair - Sneha's Story Sneha S is a registered Tutorfair  tutor and has completed a volunteer placement for the Tutorfair Foundation.  Read her story  below..... Being a Masters student in London usually means long hours in the library, essays that will make your head hurt and one too many existential crises. It also means you yearn to step out of your academic lifestyle and do something different. For me, this welcome respite came in the form of Tutorfair. Having seen advertisements of the company pop up on my social media, I finally decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did. Tutorfair is an educational company that provides you with the opportunity to help tutor students and adults of all ages to improve their subjects. These subjects range from sports to academics and you have the luxury of choosing as many subjects as you wish to tutor once you sign up to this website. Excited and a tad bit nervous, I got down to business and started my own profile on the website which was quite simple, that coming from a technologically challenged person like me, is a big deal ! Once I had signed up, I was greeted with a warm welcome mail and an invitation to a seminar hosted by the company in partnership with Teach First, one of the leading educational organisations attempting to end educational inequality in London. The training day  provided two massive benefits. For one, it taught you and educated you, the tutor, about how to improve your teaching skills and your interactions with the students. It also speeded up your verification process on the website. So, on a not so sunny London morning, I headed to the training day, curious and ready to participate in everything it had to offer. It was a wonderful experience to say the least. I was made aware of the huge disparities in education in the city and learnt a plethora of ways to not just intermingle with the students but also make the syllabus more interesting. I got to learn how to pick up on subtle clues about students who might not be coming from the most stable of homes and how to deal with them without hurting or causing harm to the students and also got to practice the newly learned methods. The training day  also gave me the chance to network with other tutors who not only came from all different spheres of life but also had loads of experiences of their own to share. The entire day  was fascinating and I would do it all over again, if given the chance. Once I had completed the training, I was invited to the Tutorfair office, where I was provided with a more detailed description as to how the company and website works. I understood the ropes of the company and was delighted to stumble across two adorable pets roaming around in the office. Hurray for all the animal lovers !! Amidst talking to the other newly signed tutors and munching on delicious snacks, we were led to a small room one by one where we were videotaped. This video allows for a more personal network between the client and tutor, providing the client with a little more information regarding the tutor they might possibly book. Before I knew it, my profile was live on the website. The company gives the tutors the luxury of choosing the rate per hour at which they would like to tutor and also choose the timings for when they are available. Having one or two or more references makes the profile even more attractive and welcoming and soon, I was caught up in the world of tutoring. There are times when it can get challenging, parents worried about their children’s performances might need reassuring and at times even the children need to be constantly reminded that their hard work and dedication will pay off. Providing incentive, confidence and encouragement is key along with a constant stream of patience and motivation. For me, applying to Tutorfair was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only did it give me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and submerge myself in the world of academics from a different point of view but it also gave me the chance to give back by volunteering and by sharing the knowledge I had amassed. The feeling you experience when your student succeeds is indescribable and irreplaceable, almost like drinking hot chocolate on a very cold day. It makes you feel warm and fuzzy and you can’t help but hide that goofy smile and the contagious exhilaration that your student exudes upon succeeding. So go ahead, click on that link and sign up. Give volunteering with Tutorfair a try, I promise you, it will be worth every minute. Get Involved with The Tutorfair Foundation

Practice it with a friend.FCE Speaking Exam Practice:Canadian:You are a Canadian man. You are having your first date with a Korean exchange student. You to ok her to a diner. Your hamburger and coke come to about 10 dollars so you take out 13 dollars. Your date ordered spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, and a coke. That comes to 14.00 so you ask your date for 17.00. He should pay for the meal and you should buy coffee afterwards. Plus he wants you to pay for everything you ordered, even though he had one of your meatballs and one piece of garlic bread. Is he cheap or is there some cultural conflict at work here? Use the 4 steps to solve the problem.1. Both people explain what they find unusual about the others behavior. 2. Each person realizes the others cultural perceptions. 3. Each person learns how the problem would be handled in the others culture. 4. Together, the two people develop conflict solutions.Have any questions about speaking in the FCE exam? You can ask them in comments and well help.

A turkey-less Turkey Day - November National Vegan Awareness Month

A turkey-less Turkey Day - November National Vegan Awareness Month Photo by flavorrelish on flickr.com Maybe it’s no coincidence that National Vegan Awareness Month falls in November, the month in which college students count down the days to Thanksgiving and their quintessential turkey dinner. While many Americans consider the turkey an integral part of their festivities and would consider a turkey-less “Turkey Day” an unthinkable tragedy, vegans might beg to differ. University of Maryland junior Rachel Muccino, who grew up vegetarian and became vegan a year and a half ago, said, “I create vegan versions of food all the time! My favorite opportunity to be creative with meals is Thanksgiving.” Many people are familiar with vegetarianism, refraining from eating animals but in some cases consuming dairy products and eggs, but may be less familiar with what constitutes a vegan. Although there are many definitions, the consensus is usually that vegans are those who make the decision not to consume any animal products whatsoever. “It extends way beyond food! Vegan clothes, vegan shoes and more,” Muccino said. Veganism is a lifestyle, not simply a diet. For the vast majority of Americans, that might sound outrageously difficult and unappealing. However, as 2 percent of American adults consider themselves to be vegan, according to a Jul. 9-12 Gallup poll, there must be some benefits to the lifestyle. “I became vegan primarily to be healthier,” Muccino said, “and secondarily to refrain from participating in the abuse of animals and the environment.”Muccino said that becoming vegan helped her to feel more energetic, to lose body fat and have a contented conscience. Studies have shown that people who eat plant-based diets tend to have lower cholesterol, cancer, heart attack and obesity rates. In addition, a vegan’s diet depends heavily upon fruits, vegetables, whole grains and alternative protein sources such as beans, tofu and lentils, all of which are very healthy. When Muccino’s friends find out she’s vegan and also does not consume soy and gluten, they often ask what in the world she can eat. “The answer to that is: a lot!” Muccino said. “There are so many vegan alternatives to delicious animal-product food. Portabello burgers, veggie sausage, coconut milk yogurt, almond milk, granola, fruit popsicles instead of ice cream! The list goes on and on!” However, Muccino does acknowledge the difficulties in being vegan. In order to consume enough calories in a day, Muccino packs plenty of snacks. Muccino also makes a point to eat plenty of kale and beans to bolster her protein intake and lots of coconut milk to make up for any calcium deficiency in her diet. Although she struggled as a vegan while living in dorms on campus, now that she has her own kitchen in her Commons apartment, she has the opportunity to buy her own food from a variety of locations. “I buy all my food at markets or Whole Foods or Trader Joes,” Muccino said. “Around campus, I go to the Co-Op or order vegan options at Lime or Wasabi.” Over the past year and a half, Muccino has found ways to find or create her own vegan versions of all the foods she loves most, and Thanksgiving will be no exception. So if you sit down to your Thanksgiving feast and perhaps pity vegans like Muccino as you enjoy your gravy-adorned mashed potatoes, don’t feel too sorry. “I can make mashed potatoes and gravy vegan style,” Muccino said. “Just use vegetable stock, olive oil and coconut milk instead of chicken stock, butter and cow’s milk!”
